Food: The Bok Shop eyes UK expansion after funding boost

Brighton’s The Bok Shop has secured £1.2m in private equity funding and will now look to expand its retail estate across the UK.

The pride of East Street, and arguably Brighton’s best chicken joint, The Bok Shop, is planning to open 10 new sites over the next two years following a private equity deal.

The £1.2m funding agreement will allow owners to build on their current retail estate, which to date counts restaurants in Brighton and Eastbourne, and a dark kitchen in Croydon.

A 100-cover site in Southampton’s West Quay is currently slated for a summer 2021 opening, and at least nine other venues are planned for the next two years.

Speaking to Big Hospitality The Bok Shop co-owner Jamie O’Mara commented:

“We never in our wildest dreams thought that we would be sharing what we created at our little shop in Brighton with the rest of the UK. It’s been a hard slog filled with failures and success’, amplified by the pandemic, but all in the name of growth both as individuals and as a company.”

In reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic the restaurant launched its own ‘Cluck and collect’ system – just one of many Brighon institutions turning to tailor-made delivery solutions in order to keep a tight rein on quality.

“We feel there is a gap in the market for a quality chicken inspired offer like ours, what Honest Burger has done to burgers, or Pizza Pilgrims has done with pizza. We want to do that for chicken. We’ve lived and breathed The Bok Shop and the hospitality industry since opening the doors in 2017 and we can’t wait to share the journey.”
